To dance, above all, is to enter into the motions of life. It is an action, a movement, a process. The dance of life is not so much a metaphor as a fact.

Molly Root hails from Ann Arbor, MI and holds a BFA in Modern Dance Performance and Emphasis in Choreography from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She was classically trained in ballet and music in southeastern Michigan and danced with Flint Youth Ballet during her last years there. Molly was the recipient of the 2002 Monticello Award and Scholarship for emerging choreography from Regional Dance America, and attended their Craft of Choreography Intensive later that year. She was also awarded the Choreography Prize in 2006 from UArts for her work at the university.

Molly was the recipient of the CEC New Edge Mix Artist grant in Philadelphia to present new choreography in 2007.  She has performed in Philly at the Arts Bank Theater, CEC Meetinghouse Theater, City Hall,  Painted Bride Theater, Mascher Dance Space, Merriam Theater, Drake Theater and several site-specific places for various artists.  Molly is most proud of her work with fellow dancer & choreographer John Luna, and teacher Curt Haworth.  She is an avid Jane Austen, Doug Varone, and Susan Marshall enthusiast.

Molly self-produced work for the 2006 Philly Fringe Festival.  Her work was performed in the fall of 2007 in the Philly Dance Fest, and at Dance New Amsterdam in NYC.  During the fall of 2007 Molly also performed with Group Motion Dance Company, artistic director Manfred Fischbeck.

Molly is an active arts administrator who recently worked for the Chelsea Center for the Arts and the Detroit Dance Collective, both in southeastern Michigan.  Molly moved to Chicago in the fall of 2009 to focus on dance and develop her role as an arts administrator.  Arts admin has become an outlet for Molly to help bring arts into the homes of more families.  She is thankful to have the opportunity to work in the arts, both onstage and off.

Recently Molly partnered with photographer Jacob Skogheim from Chelsea, MI on fabric and movement photographs.  Please take a look at Jakob's gallery of the project by visiting his website.
